FINDING A PIECE OF STRAW IN A GIANT STACK OF NEEDLES

Updated: Jun 6, 2022

I know, the picture doesn’t match the heading, but do you know how difficult—scrub that, how impossible it is to find that image? Well, let me tell you, it’s as impossible as finding a manager or agent who will talk to you while you look for representation. See what I did there? C’mon, that was a cool link… Anyway, back to the topic, or moan, that is this blog.

Steven Stiefel and I have a wealth of projects, experience, and moderate success behind us, and yet for the life of us we cannot get an agent or manager to talk to us. I know, it sounds like I’m having a pity party, but honestly, I’m not. I’m highlighting how difficult it is to get someone to champion your cause. I get they have to be careful, after all, it is their reputation that’s at stake, and therefore their livelihood, and if I was in their place, I too would be careful, but they also have to take a risk, right? That’s what we as writers do. We have an idea, we write it, edit it, rewrite, edit, rewrite, and so on until we’re convinced that it’s as good as it can be. Then we show it to a few select peers, who proceed to poke holes in it, and we start again, but in the end, we have a finished product. Now, after spending all this time and effort on it, do we know that it will sell? No, we don’t. Do we even know if just one person will like it? No, we don’t, but we take that risk regardless. That’s the nature of our job or career, or whatever this hell they call writing is, so of course we’re happy to do it. When I say happy, I mean of course obliged…

Anyway, at some point, we set our creation free into the big wide world hoping it will soar to great heights, while praying that it won’t be shot down before it’s even gotten off the ground. Is it too much to ask for an agent or manager to do the same? No, I hear you cry in unison, or was that the TV? Either way, you agree, right? So, if you’re a manager or agent, do get in touch, we may just surprise you…
